You wouldn’t buy a cheap car if you knew it was going to cost you a fortune in gas and repairs. Think of your furnace upgrade in the same way. Like many major investments, a lower initial price is not the only factor to consider. When it comes to your furnace, you also need to think about efficiency, the return on your investment and proper sizing.

A furnace upgrade is a major purchase, so do your homework before you buy. Consider the following factors as you shop around:

  • Efficiency: The efficiency of a furnace is measured by its AFUE rating; higher numbers mean that more fuel is converted to heat and less is wasted. If you live in a region that experiences extreme winter temperatures, the highest possible efficiency rating is the way to go. However, the northwest Arkansas climate is not quite so harsh, so the highest efficiency model may not make the most sense.
  • Return on Investment: Work with your contractor to calculate your energy savings and the estimated amount of time it will take to recoup your initial investment. You will need your old utility bills and the AFUE rating of your existing system to estimate your monthly energy savings.
  • Sizing: One of the most common mistakes made with furnace upgrades is buying new equipment that is the same size as your old equipment. There is no guarantee that your existing system was properly sized in the first place, and even if it was, changes in your home can impact its heating load. If you have new windows or more insulation you may need a smaller unit. However, additions or installation of larger windows could require a larger furnace.
