Keep Your Heat Pump Well-Maintained, And It Will Reward You With Long-Lasting EfficiencyAs we transition from cooling season to heating season, it’s time for heat pump maintenance. Call your technician now, before you switch to heating mode, to make sure your heat pump is operating efficiently and to prevent voiding your equipment warranty.

There are a few heat pump maintenance activities you should do on your own:

  • Regularly change the air filters during heating and cooling seasons. You will help improve energy efficiency, maintain good airflow and lengthen the life of your heat pump.
  • Don’t make frequent thermostat changes. Heat pumps operate differently than furnaces and air conditioners. Setting your programmable thermostat and not making a lot of adjustments will reduce wear and tear.
  • Keep the area around the outdoor unit clean and unobstructed. You should also make sure you don’t have furniture or other objects blocking the air supply and return registers in your home.

Seasonal heat pump maintenance activities that a professional technician should perform include:

  • Inspecting the entire system, including ductwork, coils, filters and the blower motor.
  • Identifying leaks in ducts and properly sealing them.
  • Measuring airflow and making adjustments as necessary.
  • Checking for refrigerant leaks and adjusting the level if necessary.
  • Inspecting electrical connections and tightening loose ones.
  • Lubricating the motors, adjusting belts and replacing worn parts.
  • Ensuring that the thermostat is operating correctly and that equipment can only operate in one mode.

Although it may be tempting to put off heat pump maintenance until next season, especially if you are not experiencing any problems, regular service will improve efficiency, keeping your monthly bills low and enabling your equipment to last longer.
