If you’ve got a new addition to your home that isn’t served by your main HVAC system or ductwork, deciding how to keep the space warm and comfortable may be a challenge. Ductless mini splits have the answer.

A ductless mini split is a small, isolated comfort unit independent from your main HVAC system. It can be installed in a single room, or can serve an entire new wing of your house. Ductless mini-splits are convenient and unobtrusive.

Here’s how it works: An indoor air handling unit is connected to an outdoor unit, much like with a traditional heat pump. The two are connected via a cable passed through a small hole made in your wall, where the inner unit is installed. Most homeowners choose to install the outdoor unit very near to the indoor unit, so the cable doesn’t need to be very long. However, some systems allow you to hook up multiple indoor components to a single outdoor unit. In this case, longer cables can be used.

Ductless mini splits should always be sized in proportion to the amount of space they’ll be required to condition. Before installation, your contractor should calculate the amount of heating that will be required, and recommend the ideal placement for the system.

Mini splits can be especially convenient for spaces you don’t always need to keep conditioned, such as guest rooms. This allows you to save energy by not heating spaces that don’t require it, and gives guests control of their own comfort settings.

Here are a few home situations that could benefit with the addition of a ductless mini split:

  • A recently added room or wing
  • Garages converted to living spaces
  • Attics converted to living spaces
  • Homes with radiant heating
  • Homes heated with space heaters or wood stoves

Some ductless mini split models also filter the air as they condition it, providing a way to keep fresh air cycling.
