As a homeowner, you may have heard about the importance of preventive maintenance for your HVAC system. You may also have wondered if it’s really necessary. Neglecting preventive maintenance is easy. Since your comfort system is out of sight, it’s usually out of mind — as long as it’s working correctly, that is. The unfortunate truth is that neglect causes most cases of premature HVAC failure in northwest Arkansas, as well as unnecessarily high energy bills.
Any system that sees constant, daily use is going to require upkeep. Your car receives regular oil changes, tuneups and tire rotations. Your HVAC system also should receive regular attention to help it operate at peak efficiency, reduce wear and tear and keep your utility bills manageable.
There are some things you can do, such as keeping the air filter fresh between service calls. A clean filter traps dust, dirt and other pollutants, keeping them from circulating with your indoor air. A dirty filter can’t trap these particles, which are then forced to back up in your equipment. Also, a thick coating of dirt decreases airflow. If the system strains itself to provide the proper amount of airflow, you’ll pay more but be less comfortable.
There are also things a professional should address, such as:
- Checking your heat exchanger for proper functioning
- Checking the refrigerant levels in your air conditioner
- Ensuring all voltage and current levels are correct and safe
- Reducing the risk of fire and dangerous combustion fumes from your heating system
- Cleaning and adjusting the blower to facilitate better airflow
So how often does your HVAC system need preventive maintenance? Twice a year, before the heating and cooling seasons, is ideal. After one season and before the next, your equipment should be repaired and prepared. Also, every home and every comfort system is unique. Regular maintenance allows your technician to become familiar with yours, so he can better identify small troubles and prevent major catastrophe.
