Dual-fuel heating systems give homeowners the best of two worlds in meeting residential comfort needs. They combine the most efficient qualities of two different fuels to achieve a higher level of performance than either energy source could provide by itself.
Dual-fuel systems consist of an electric heat pump that provides heat during milder parts of the season and an oil or gas furnace that kicks in when temperatures drop. Heat pumps work best when temperatures are above 30 degrees. When it gets colder than that, heat pumps quickly lose efficiency. Dual-fuel systems use the heat pump when temperatures are above 30 degrees, but switch over to the furnace for a better source of heating when temperatures drop much below freezing.
With two levels of operation, dual-fuel systems always function at their highest level of efficiency. The heat pump is not overworked by trying to provide heat when it’s too cold. When the heat pump operates, it uses cheaper electricity to warm your home. In contrast, the furnace doesn’t come on when temperatures are milder, which means there is less waste of fuel. The furnace runs only when needed. A dual-fuel arrangement causes less wear and tear on the system as a whole since the workload is shared between the heat pump and the furnace.
A dual-fuel system gives you more control of the energy you use to warm your home. The balance point, or the temperature at which the system switches from one heat source to another, can be set by your dealer or HVAC professional.
Even though you have to maintain two sources of fuel, the increased efficiency and the season-long savings on your heating bills can more than make up for any inconvenience this causes.
