With a whole-house humidification system, you can dramatically improve the interior comfort of your home while also saving energy and reducing your winter heating bills. Humidification increases indoor air quality and relieves physical problems associated with dry air, such as nosebleeds, itchy skin and irritated throats. A frequently overlooked benefit of whole-house humidification is that it allows you to save money by keeping your comfort level consistent while running your heating system at a lower level.

Dry air, which is more common in winter, will make you feel colder than you should given the actual temperature of the room. This is because dry air absorbs moisture from your skin; as that moisture is absorbed into the air, your body temperature is lowered and you feel cooler. Even if you have your furnace’s thermostat set high, the unavoidable dry air will make you feel colder than room temperature.

A whole-house humidification system works with your forced-air heat system to put moisture back into your interior air, preventing the moisture loss from your body that makes you feel colder. As air flows through your heating system, the humidifier adds moisture by spraying minute amounts of water vapor into the air. The moistened air then travels back through the supply ductwork and increases humidity throughout your house.

When there is more moisture in the air, the evaporation of moisture from your skin decreases. This allows you to feel more comfortable when the room is at a lower temperature. You can run your furnace at a lower temperature setting and still be warm. If you can reduce your home’s temperature by just three degrees, you could save as much as five percent a year on your heating bills.
