Why Geothermal Systems are Good for the EnvironmentThroughout the United States, there are almost 500,000 geothermal heating and cooling systems in operation today. Once a fringe option for effectively regulating the temperature in your home, today’s geothermal systems are the most cost-effective and energy efficient you can buy. What is it about these systems that makes them so good for the environment?

To put their environmental impact in perspective, let’s take for example those 500,000 geothermal systems in operation right now. Per year, they reduce the United States’ carbon footprint by over one million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. That is why the EPA has labeled them the energy efficient, environmentally clean and cost-effective systems in operation.

Geothermal systems operate by utilizing the groundwater under your home. Because this water is far underground, it remains at a very stable temperature all year round. In the winter, the system uses heat from the water being pumped up to warm the air in your home. In the summer, it cools your home by taking the heat out of the air and pumping it back down into the ground.

Using groundwater and underground piping, a geothermal system uses a lot less energy. The EPA estimates that these systems use 44 percent less energy and create 44 percent less waste than air-sourced systems. With estimates suggesting that 40 percent of U.S. emissions result from heating, cooling and hot water, installing a geothermal system is perhaps the best way to take care of our environment.
