Simple Ways to Control Pet Allergens in Your Springdale HomePets can bring a lot of joy to your household, and research has even indicated that having a pet may lower blood pressure. However, many people are allergic to pets. The cause of these allergies is often their dead skin cells, otherwise known as pet dander. Here are just some ways to control pet allergens in your home, so everyone can breathe easier.

Keep Your Pet Healthy and Well-Groomed

  • Healthy pets have healthier skin and shed less dander. If your pet’s skin seems dry, consult your veterinarian for advice.
  • Brush your pets outdoors or in your garage at least once a day. Brushing helps remove old skin cells, so they don’t accumulate inside your home.
  • A weekly bath is more effective than brushing alone. If bathing is not suitable for a particular pet, you can substitute wiping the pet down with a damp cloth after brushing.

Use an Air Filtration System

Since dander is easily airborne, it makes sense that one of the best ways to control pet allergens is to use a whole-house air filtration system. These work in conjunction with a forced-air heating and cooling system to improve indoor air quality more efficiently than a traditional HVAC system.

Keep Upholstery and Carpeting Clean

  • Use washable throws on furniture to protect it from saliva, dander and other common allergens. Some stores sell throws specifically made to protect furniture from pets, but using any washable blanket or throw is better than not using one.
  • Vacuum furniture and carpeting weekly. For best results, use a vacuum cleaner with excellent suction and HEPA filtration. HEPA filters are recommended for reducing allergies because they trap allergens more efficiently than standard filters.
  • Shampoo upholstery and carpeting. Ingredients in commercial carpet and upholstery shampoos can help lift dander embedded in carpets or upholstery, so it’s easier to remove them with a vacuum. Aim to clean carpets and upholstery monthly.
