More than ever, homeowners are investing in geothermal energy. This stands to reason since geothermal systems offers a plethora of benefits, from efficient heating and cooling, low environmental footprint and a system that lasts decades. Yet, with so many benefits for switching to geothermal energy, there are still myths abound. If you want the best comfort system investment for your home, read on to get the facts about geothermal energy.

MYTH: You must have large yard space to install a geothermal HVAC unit.

This is one of the most common myths about geothermal energy. While it’s generally true that if you have plenty of landscape, you’ll probably want to choose a horizontal installation. Though, if yard space is limited, don’t worry. Your geothermal heat pump may be installed in a vertical loop system. A vertical installation uses less horizontal square footage of your yard, and goes deeper underground.

MYTH: Geothermal systems are noisy.

This myth is completely false. One of the most common complaints of the typical air-source heat pump is the noisy big box sitting by your home. A geothermal system is installed underground. There’s no obtrusive outdoor unit to contend with.

MYTH: You can heat your home with geothermal energy, but not cool your home.

This myth may have evolved with the term “heat pump” which implies a heating system, rather than a cooling system. However, like all other heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps offer exceptional home cooling (and nice dehumidification in our region).

MYTH: Geothermal systems are too expensive.

As with any investment, you want to look at the lifetime costs. Yes, an air-source heat pump is going to cost less for first cost. Though, over the life of an air-source and geothermal heat pump, the geothermal system is going to save you money in energy savings and longevity. Consider that, as far as expected useful lifespan, you’ll generally need two air-source heat pumps to one geothermal system.

Lastly, ask your HVAC contractor for a lifetime cost analysis comparing high-efficiency air-source heat pumps and high-efficiency geothermal heat pump systems. In this way, you’ll get the facts about geothermal energy and see for yourself how much you stand to gain through greater comfort and efficiency.
