Geothermal

Did you know that you can heat and cool your home without a traditional ac unit by using the Earth’s temperature beneath your home? And, did you know that you can do that in a way that’s quiet, consistent, and earth-friendly? You can leave that old ac unit behind and do all this with a geothermal HVAC system

What is geothermal?

Geothermal refers to the use of ground temperatures to heat and cool a building. It relies on the temperature in the ground. When the air is cool outside, the ground is warmer. When the air is warm, the ground temperature is cooler making for perfect geothermal conditions.

How does a geothermal HVAC work?

A group of pipes is inserted into the ground using special machinery. They can be laid vertically or horizontally depending on the site. These pipes are what allow heat to be transferred to and from your home without using any fuel, making geothermal extremely eco-friendly.

Simply stated, there are two main components of a geothermal HVAC system:

  • Heat pump – this is the inside unit
  • Ground loops – these are the underground pipes which connect to the heat pump and transfer energy.

Geothermal heating in winter:

Water is circulated by the ground loops allowing the water to absorb heat from the ground. The heated water is run through the loops to the indoor heat pump which extracts the heat from the water. The heat is then distributed as warm air throughout the building. The water is not wasted because it will re-circulate to once again collect heat from the ground.

Geothermal cooling in summer:

In the summer, it’s almost in reverse. The heat pump transfers hot air from the building allowing cool air to circulate in the building. In the summer, the water leaving the building is warmer then when it returns.

Geothermal HVAC systems have been around about 60 years and is used in about 75% of new homes in certain European countries.  It’s widely recognized  as energy efficient, very cost effective, and environmentally friendly.
