The summer is in full swing in Northwest Arkansas and it’s time to turn on the air conditioning and enjoy the cool air! However, you might be a bit hesitant to turn the air conditioning on full blast after you receive your first utility bill. Don’t fret! There are all sorts of ways to limit your air conditioning bill while still staying cool.
Mind Your Curtains and Blinds
Lower your home’s temperature by closing the curtain and blinds during the day. Lowering them will block the sun’s hot rays. It is prudent to close the doors and windows to boot. You can re-open them once the sun sets so that the comparatively cooler air can infiltrate your living space.
Open the Windows at Bedtime
If it isn’t too hot out, go ahead and open your windows at bedtime. The nighttime cool air will keep you comfortable. You don’t have to open every window at night. Just be sure to open those closest to your sleeping space so the cool air flows until you wake.
One of the most creative ways to keep cool while decreasing your utility bill is to hang your bedding in the coolest part of your home. In most instances, the coolest area is the basement. If your basement has windows, open them to expose your sheets to the fresh air.
A Green Thumb
Planting tall trees with ample foliage near your home will shield the sun’s rays. Opt for deciduous trees as their leaves will fall during the cooler months, allowing the sunlight to warm your home.
Turn off Heat Sources
Turning on the oven on a hot day will force your air conditioner to work that much harder. The result will undoubtedly be an increase in your utility bill. Try to eat as much cold/room temperature food as you can during the summer months. Alternatively, you can cook food in a small convection oven/microwave to limit the amount of heat released into your living space. It’s also worth noting that incandescent light bulbs generate heat. Use LED light bulbs for your home’s lights and you’ll reap the benefits in the form of a lower air conditioning bill over time.
